Leslie police chief surrenders

AMERICUS, GA (WALB) - Leslie Police Chief Bob Smith turned himself in, under an indictment today in Americus. He was with his lawyer, Willie Weaver.

A Sumter County grand jury indicted him for making false statements to law enforcement, stemming from a drug investigation by the Sumter County Sheriff's Office.

Georgia POST command, which certifies law enforcement officers, has also suspended his arrest powers and position as chief until this case has been completed.

Smith posted a bond and left.
