ALBANY, GA (WALB) - Plans for a new multimodal transit center in Albany that has dragged on for years could be a step closer to reality.
Tuesday commissioners approved submitting a grant application to the U.S. Department of Transportation.
They're requesting 10-million dollars to build a state of the art center at the site of the current bus station.
The city would have to provide 2.5-million dollars in SPLOST money which is now available.
"We would go to two stories instead of one which allows us to bring the administrative offices into the bus station which we think will be much more efficient. It also gives us a little money to help us stabilize the Ritz Cultural Theater, which we think could be really good," said Wes Smith, Asst. City Manager.
The city should find out in 4 to 6 months whether they'll get the grant.
