ALBANY, GA (WALB) - A new housing plan could overhaul a chunk of central Albany.
Tuesday city commissioners signed off on the Oaks at North Intown Choice Neighborhoods Transformation Plan that includes demolishing McIntosh and Golden Age Homes and replacing them with mixed income housing.
It's needed to help the Albany Housing Authority secure tax credits for 10-million dollars for construction in the 500 block of Residence Avenue.
"It's very important from the state's perspective that developers don't work independent of the community. They want to make sure that we're doing things that the community endorses and is for the best interest of the community at large," said Dan McCarthy, Executive Director.
Housing Authority officials will send in the application to the Department of Community Affairs June 11th.
They should find out in September if they get those tax credits.
