TIFT CO., GA (WALB) - Officials released the name of the trooper who shot a man in the face during a confrontation at a traffic stop.
Senior Trooper Richard Kennedy fired his weapon during the traffic stop, a report Tuesday said.
It happened just after 11 a.m. Friday morning. in the northbound lanes of Interstate 75 near mile marker 71.
According to a report by GBI Special Agent in Charge J.T. Ricketson, a trooper from the Tift County post pulled over a female driver of a Jeep Grand Cherokee because she was speeding. Officials said she was going 98 mph.
During the traffic stop, the trooper tried to place the female driver under arrest for having a suspended license, The GBI said that's when the passenger started a fight with the trooper.
The trooper fired their weapon once, hitting the man in the face.
Prince Williamson and Taylor Bins, who were in the vehicle at the time, were charged in the case.
The GBI said they will review the dashcam video and audio.
The GBI will conduct a thorough investigation to determine exactly what occurred during the incident.
When the investigation is complete it will be turned over to District Attorney Paul Bowdon.
