VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) - The Valdosta-Lowndes Tourism Authority voted Tuesday to spend nearly $230,000 to make major roof repairs to the James H. Rainwater Conference Center in Valdosta.
The tourism authority discussed the repairs at their meeting this morning, saying that the repairs were much needed as the roof was almost 20 years old. Lowndes Roofing won the contract with the low bid of $226,780. The other bid considered at the meeting was from Hall Contractors for $264,800.
Tourism authority general manager Tim Riddle said this was actually part of their ongoing project to update and upgrade the entire conference center.
He said without the repairs, organizations may start to shy away from doing business at the conference center. "I mentioned when I went into the board meeting today we've got one group we just did a new five year contract with. If that group had come here last year and we'd had three or four leaks, I doubt they'd wanna book five more years with the place," Riddle opined.
As of Tuesday, the repairs were expected to begin around the end of June or beginning of July and be finished around September or October.
