Things you need to know before firing up the grill

ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

Albany firefighters have some safety tips before you fire up the grill this weekend.

They say it's important to remove excess grease from your grill and to keep your grill away from your home and kids.

"You want to make sure that your grill is not close to your house because it can also start a structure a fire by it being so close, so maybe about 5 feet or more away from your home,” said Sheniqua Robinson, Fire Safety Inspector.

"We want to remind people who have the gas grills make sure that your gas is off when you're done cooking and always make sure you have a fire extinguisher,” said Jennifer Jackson, Fire Safety Inspector.

They also say you should not leave your grill unattended.
