The unofficial start of summer is also the unofficial start of grilling season.

Marvin Jennings and his family arrived at Mike's Country store to get some last minute items for a weekend cookout.

"Well today I'm here to pick up some meat,” said Marvin Jennings, Veteran. “I plan on barbecuing this weekend with some family and friends."

The retired Marine who returned home from Afghanistan in 2013 says Memorial Day means more to him than just a barbecue. It's a day to honor and remember those who served our country.

"It's Memorial Day to give them that memorial and remembrance of what they've done for us and the country,” said Jennings.

Lots of customers were looking for charcoal and their favorite meat.

"It's been pretty good here the last couple of days. We're looking forward to a big weekend,” said Todd Whigham, Mike's County Store Manager.

Whigham says chicken, steaks, and ribs have been the most popular items. With the weekend kicking off the official start of Summer, Whigham says he makes sure to order plenty of meat to keep up with the high demand.

"We order all of it in and get it ready,” said Whigham. “We do a bunch of like stuffed Jalapeno peppers. We'll probably sell lots of them tomorrow. We had to work and get a bunch of that worked up and took care of."

They also make their own stuffed chicken breasts and sausage, some of their specialties.

"We've got it going on pretty good down here at Mike's,” said Whigham. “We're all about the meat down here at Mike's."
