LAKE BLACKSHEAR, GA (WALB) - State agencies are teaming up to promote safety this Memorial Day weekend.

Their "Summer of Safety" campaign encourages drivers and boaters to obey laws, wear seatbelts or life jackets and stay sober when riding in boats or personal watercraft.

There have already been 10 boating deaths in Georgia this year and boating season is just getting underway.

"Normally we'll run 12 to 15, sometimes it gets a little bit higher. But we've already got 10 fatalities this year. And our boating season has not even got kicked off yet." said Col. Eddie Henderson of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources. Authorities encourage folks to check their boats before heading out to make sure they're working properly and they have all the necessary safety equipment.

469 people have been killed on Georgia roads this year.

64 more than this time last year.
