A Ben Hill County Commissioner is stepping down to run for higher office.
Scott Downing resigned to run for the District 155 seat in the Georgia House of Representatives.
He hopes to replace Jay Roberts who stepped down to take a job with the Department of Transportation.
Downing says he always hoped to run for higher office, but the chance came sooner than he anticipated.
"I didn't think that he would leave that seat but I have often thought the only way to be more effective is to get to the state level and try to represent south Georgia at the state, " Downing said.
The special election to fill the District 155 will be held in July.
The election to fill Downing's spot on the county commission hasn't been set yet but likely will be held on that same date in July.
