Hopes to build affordable housing in Ben Hill County

Ben Hill County leaders are working on a plan to bring much-needed affordable rental homes to the area.

When Lakisha Flemings was looking for a new apartment in Ben Hill County this place was the best option.

"We didn't have a lot of choices," Lakisha Flemings said,

Flemings says as a mother, her top priority was a safe place for her child.

"It's a safe place to stay it's well kept it's very clean,"Lakisha Flemings said.

And her new home turned out to be even better than she expected.

"We are each others sisters and brothers we are kind of like family," Lakisha Flemings said.

Which worked out for her and she hopes the new housing project in Ben Hill County will have the same impact in the area as well.

"Affordable housing is a huge need in this community and it's been several years since we have a development as this,"Lakisha Flemings said.

Right now, Ben Hill County Development Authority Executive Director of development Courtney Whitman says they are planing to bring in housing similar to where Fleming lives. But it will bring more than a roof over someone's head.

"Any project that will bring jobs to Ben Hill County we are excited to work on,"Courtney Whitman said.

If approved, the county will work with Maco Development on the will bring 4 full time jobs plus construction jobs. As well make an impact as well

"Impact of a million dollars to our local businesses and 225-thousand dollars in government services each year," Courtney Whitman said.

But more importantly more options for people looking for an apartment in Ben Hill County.

The next step in this project starts tonight the zoning board will meet to rezone the new property.
