Dawson holds summer camp for children

For the first time leaders in Dawson are offering a summer program for children.

Major Frank Thornton with the Dawson Police Department is the director of the community summer recreation camp. City leaders are behind the program, which will be held in the old high school gym next to the police department.

It's open to Terrell County children ages 5 to 14.

"This is something that's been needed for a long time. Because we have kids during the summer, they may not have anything to do. So it was at the mayor's request that we get a program started that will help these kids," said Major Thornton.

The volunteer based program will run from 12 pm to 3 pm during June and July.

Parents will have to pay a $35 registration fee per child. More volunteers are needed.
