Coworkers remember Cordele murder victim

CORDELE, GA (WALB) - Police continue searching for one or two killers. 39-year old Tellis Fort was gunned down outside his home on 12th Street just after 10 Thursday night; police have not released whether they have any good leads.

“Pretty much right now, it's very, very general, and pretty much only two black makes that were seen running. That's pretty much all we have at this time,” said Detective Ketorie Sales with the Cordele Police Department.

GBI agents processed the scene Friday morning and have not released new details since then. Friends of Tellis Fort tell us they're devastated by his murder. Mr. Fort worked at New York Hi Fashion for more than 13 years. As you could imagine, his coworkers are shocked; some are still in denial.

The phone was ringing off the hook as news of Tellis Fort's murder quickly spread around town.

"Some kind of way he always had this way of just making you smile and laugh. Working with him, he was a team player. Wasn't nothing you could ask Tellis to do that he wouldn't do," said coworker Anthony Bass.

Bass didn't want to believe the call he got last night.

"It really hit me when I rode by his house and I see that they had his house roped off,” said Bass. “Reality kicked in that it was true and still in denial somewhat now.”

Friends described Fort as a selfless guy with no enemies.

"He's just that kind of guy."

It makes this murder seem even more senseless.

"If they wanted anything, he would have [given] it to them. He had that heart," said Bass.

Investigators combed the scene all night and well into the morning looking for evidence.

Bass hopes they're able to find the people responsible.

"They need to be caught. We got people like that walking around doing things like that. Man, we live in a real cold world today," said Bass.

Until those people are caught, Bass and other coworkers will remember their friend.

"I'm gonna miss him. I really am."

And think of all the good memories he leaves behind. We have not heard much from police, and they have not released any motive in the murder.

Bass tells me Fort leaves behind a daughter and girlfriend.
