Bainbridge prison reduces population to save money

BAINBRIDGE, GA (WALB) - Up to 100 inmates will transfer from Decatur County Correctional Institute to state facilities, and prison personnel will be laid off, to save almost a half million dollars for the county.

The facility is losing money, and Warden Elijah McCoy said that about ten workers would be cut, but there may be jobs they could fill within the county government structure.

At current rates, the Decatur County Prison is losing more than $2 million per year.

When the transition is complete, within weeks, there will be about 220 inmates in the prison.
