ALBANY, GA (WALB) - The Phoebe foundation is asking for donations to build resident housing.
They've raised more than $1 million so far.
Phoebe leaders say if medical students finish school and do their residency here, they are more likely to stay and practice within a 60 mile radius.
The proposed resident housing is planned for Jackson street near the hospital.
"If you've gone to the doctor recently, not many doctors are accepting more patients, so it's a problem," said board member Jay Sharpe. "The more doctors we are able to get to the community, the more jobs it will create."
Several breakfasts are planned for area businesses interested in the project.
Groundbreaking is tentatively scheduled for November.
