ALBANY, GA (WALB) - A master plan for downtown was being presented to the public at the government center Tuesday evening.
City commissioners discussed the plan, which recommends tearing down the civic center to make room for an outdoor sports complex.
Several commissioners expressed great concern about losing that facility. Commissioner Roger Marietta says they need to take into consideration past failures and move ahead cautiously.
"I think we ought to have a measure plan that has incremental steps to bring in residential and with minimal public investment. And that's going to slow things down, but the reality is if we jump ahead of the curve and there's no people downtown it's going to fail again."
Marietta says the consultants who developed the plan are overly optimistic.
Implementing the entire plan would cost about $16 million, which Marietta says is too costly.
