Parking lot entrance closure aimed at increasing student safety

VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) -

Work was underway for the second day Tuesday to permanently close off a parking lot entrance at VSU's University Center.

The sidewalk and curbing along N. Patterson St. were being extended across the entrance at W. Jane St. in order to prevent vehicles from turning in or out of the parking lot there.

This is one of many recommendations GDOT officials made in their traffic safety study of the roads and sidewalks around VSU in the Spring of 2014. The study was conducted after 21 year old VSU student Lizzie Lomar was hit and killed while legally crossing in a crosswalk at the intersection of Patterson and College Streets in February.

As of Tuesday, work was scheduled to continue from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday until the project is complete. The project was estimated to cost around $11,000.
