GBI identifies seven arrested in Lee Co. death

LEESBURG, GA (WALB) - The Americus Office of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) and the Lee County Sheriff's Office announced the arrest seven people in the assault on Lee county residents Kent Griffin Adam, 50, and his son, James Calvin Adam, 22, at their home Flowing Well Road, outside Leesburg.

The suspects were there by invitation of James Adam when a fight started, during which James Adam was assaulted. The suspects left, but returned a short time later and engaged in a second  fight with James Adam and Kent Adam.

Each person charged was given a bond, with several restrictions.

"I'm going to give them a bond, each one of them a bond of $25,000," said Judge Jim Thurman.

House arrest was one of those restrictions, and they cannot contact the victim, or anyone else who was charged in the case.

The Assistant District Attorney asked for all the bonds to be deferred for at least seven days, but the request was denied.

Both James and Kent Adam were seriously injured in the assault. The father and son transported themselves to Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital in Albany, where they ultimately refused treatment. They returned to their Flowing Well Road home, where Kent Adam became unresponsive and died.

An autopsy of Kent Adam was performed by the GBI crime lab in Macon today and the results are pending. James Adam was transported back to Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital where he was treated and released.

"It was kind of, kind of startled all of us. When you get up and see yellow crime tape and it kind of startled every one of us," said neighbor Wallace Miller.

Long time resident Wallace Miller cannot believe the crime happened just a couple hundred yards from his front door.

"This is a very quiet neighborhood. I built a house out here about 15 years ago and we've had no violence whatsoever," said Miller.

The autopsy was done on Adam to determine his cause of death, and prosecutors said charges could be upgraded if it is determined he died from injuries received during the fight.

"There's a lot of good people out here, so we don't want this one incident to put us all in the same boat," said Miller.

The suspects fled the scene but were arrested by GBI agents and Sheriff's Deputies later on the morning of May 10th. Five adults and two juveniles were arrested and detained for the assaults.

The following is a list of the adults arrested and their charges:

Aric William Lee Cates, 19, 184 Hartley Lane Leesburg - one (1) count Aggravated Assault and one (1) count Aggravated Battery

Terry James Gravett Jr., 21, 6008 Willow Road Albany - one (1) count Aggravated Assault and one (1) count Aggravated Battery

Alexandrea Marie Cates, 20, 184 Hartley Lane Leesburg  - one (1) count Aggravated Assault and one (1) count Aggravated Battery

Taylor Elaine Lewis, 17, 103 Augusta Court Leesburg - one (1) count Aggravated Assault and one (1) count Aggravated Battery

Klaudia Jade Truluck, 17, 444 Mount Horeb Road Oakfield - one (1) count Aggravated Assault and one (1) count Aggravated Battery

The investigation into the incident is still ongoing by the GBI and the Lee County Sheriff's Office.
