VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) - Second Harvest food bank in Valdosta was, as of Thursday, hurriedly trying to restock the food bank ahead of schools getting out for the Summer.
The food bank was working with the U.S. Postal Services to collect non-perishable items such as crackers, soup, and peanut butter.
The supply of food donated during the holidays was starting to run out. The food bank needs the food to help out families who may not be able to afford the extra food they need to feed their children during the Summer.
"Families who were already struggling to make ends meet now have to pay for child care and for meals that were normally covered by school lunch programs," said Second harvest Chief Marketing Officer Eliza McCall.
As of Thursday, blue plastic bags were being placed in mailboxes for residents to fill up with food, and volunteers were planning to collect the bags on Saturday, May 9th.
