FITZGERALD, GA (WALB) - A New York Times Best selling author, who's also a Fitzgerald native, returned home about two weeks ago.

Hundreds of people turned out April 24th to see Frances Mayes read passages from her books. Mayes, author of  Under the Tuscan Sun, was also promoting her new book.

Under Magnolia: A Southern Memoir is about her life in the south. Her publicist originally reached out to the library in Fitzgerald about nine months ago.

"She was very gracious. She sat for a very long line of well-wishers and book signings. So despite her fame she's still very, very gracious and very kind and I think she enjoyed the event as well," said Sandy Hester of the Fitzgerald Ben Hill County Library

This was her first event in Fitzgerald since her first book, Swan, was published.

Mayes spent a lot of time in the old Carnegie library, which she says sparked her desire to write and see the world.
