TIFTON, GA (WALB) - After 16 years of hosting an annual golf tournament to benefit hospice and cancer patients of Tift Regional Medical Center, Tifton native and retired LPGA golf pro Nanci Bowen said the event on May 11 will be the last in which she will be actively involved.
“I am very passionate about local hospice care and cancer treatment, as my family has been touched by these services in the past,” said Bowen. “That's why I first became involved with this event back in 2000. But, after these many years, I am passing the torch.”
Bowen is a retired Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) tour player. Originally from Tifton, she attended the University of Georgia on a full golf scholarship and joined the LPGA immediately after graduating in 1989 with an undergraduate degree in public relations.
Bowen won the 1995 Nabisco Dinah Shore, one of the LPGA's four major championships. She had two runner-up finishes in 1997 at the Rochester International and the Susan G. Komen International, plus numerous top ten finishes at LPGA tournaments between 1994 and 2005.
She will be inducted into the Georgia Golf Hall of Fame class of 2016.
“We are eternally grateful to Nanci for launching this event and lending her name to the tournament for so many years,” said organizer Joy Davis. “In the past 16 years, the Nanci Bowen Charity Event has raised a lot of money to help the patients of Hospice of Tift Area and the Anita Stewart Oncology Center with special needs. Through this tournament, Nanci has made an amazing impact.”
