New exit 5 ramp set to open Tuesday morning

Good news for Dougherty County drivers, after two years in the making, the exit 5 ramp on Liberty will finally open up Tuesday morning. The Georgia Department of Transportation began the 13.1-million dollar reconstruction of the interchange in 2013.

The idea is to shift traffic to the new ramp so crews can remove the current ramp lanes.

Drivers should be cautious in the area, a temporary signal will be put in place at Jefferson Street which could cause some delays. In addition to the exit ramp project, several other sub-projects are also being worked on.

This includes the widening of Jefferson Street from Liberty Expressway overpass to Philema Road, the adding of turn lanes, sidewalks, a raised median and bike lanes.

GDOT officials believe once all construction is complete the intersection and surrounding areas will be easier and safer for commuters. They hope it will cut down on congestion, reduce accidents and move traffic more efficiently.

Drivers can expect the entire project to be done by the end of this year.

The exit 5 ramp is set to open at 9 A.M.
