VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) - Valdosta Lowndes County Habitat for Humanity was getting ready Friday to help empower women while also raising awareness about the need for affordable housing.
On Saturday, the organization planned to hold its annual Women Build Day. Both men and women will be working on the home at 208 Miles St. in Valdosta from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., but the organization's volunteer coordinator, Kamille Gay, said the emphasis was on recruiting female volunteers.
"We see more men out here than we do women, so it's nice to have a day that's completely centered around women and just what we can do and what kind of difference we can make," Gay said.
The event is part of Habitat for Humanity's National Women Build Week, which runs from May 2nd through the 10th.
As of Friday, around 50 volunteers from VSU's Habitat for Humanity chapter and Valdosta churches were expected to turn out at Saturday's event along with members from Valdosta Lowndes Habitat for Humanity.
