VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) -

The Valdosta Goodwill Center was preparing Friday to kick off National Goodwill Week by trying to help empower the community.

The center was preparing to host its 2nd annual community empowerment event Saturday.

As of Friday morning, around 35 organizations were expected to be at the center to provide information to families who may need assistance for things like healthcare and education.

Goodwill Career Center Manager, Carla Gervin, said free food and drinks and activities for children would also be offered during the event. "We want to educate and inform the community of the available resources because sometimes there's a disconnect between what's actually out there to assist the families and then the families that actually need that assistance," said Gervin

Gervin added that she expected to be able to help over 500 families through the event.

The event runs from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
