CAMILLA, GA (WALB) - Camilla is of course, number one, an agriculture community. This time of year it's peanut planting season, and much of the peanut seed that is going in the ground is produced right at home.
The Golden Peanut and Tree Nut Company facility has been a main stay near downtown Camilla since 1930.
Home town folks looking over South Georgia's number one cash crop, from putting the seed in the ground to buying the harvest.
Everyone knows they store a huge amount of peanuts after the harvest, but most people don't know that the officials at this facility are in charge of producing the seed and purchasing for the entire company.
“We handle the purchasing of peanuts for the U.S. Both from an operationals standpoint and a commercial standpoint. It's handled out of t his operation. We also, seed is handled nationally with our company out of this location,” said Joe Campbell of Golden Peanut.
Golden Peanut has changed its name with their expansion, to Golden Peanut and Tree Nut, and are also going into the pecan business as well in Camilla. They have purchased a pecan production facility in town, as they take in another big South Georgia crop.
