Fitzgerald patients forced to find new doctor

FITZGERALD, GA (WALB) -  Dr. Ed Jones is now charged with possessing unlawful prescriptions and six counts of being a party to the crime of drug felonies.  The arrest shocked many in the community, even the sheriff.

Every week Sheriff Bobby Mc Lemore would visit Dr. Ed Jones to get his allergy shots.

"He was my Doctor I had no idea this was going on," said Sheriff Bobby Mc Lemore.

Dr. Jones had to hand over his license to issue  prescriptions to the DEA after his arrest, causing problems for his patients.

"I feel sorry for the patients I feel sorry for the office staff a lot of people got hurt in this besides him," said Sheriff Bobby Mc Lemore.

The attorney for Jones sent out a statement , saying "Dr. Jones intends to plead not guilty to all of the charges against him, and that he and his family believe strongly in the justice system and that the whole truth about this matter will come to light at the end of the day."

When Sheriff's investigators served a search warrant at the home of Shannon Benedict, they say they were surprised when they found Dr. Jones in her home.

"We had no idea that he was involved at the time of the search warrant but the evidence showed that he was," said Sheriff Bobby Mc Lemore

The Sheriff admits the Doctor is a friend but at the end of the day he has a job to do as well.

"That a sheriff does not have discretionary powers of arrest neither do I want. You show me a sheriff who thinks that he has discretionary powers of arrest and I'll show you a sheriff that is pretty close to the front door of a federal prison," said Sheriff Bobby Mc Lemore

The investigation has been handed over to the DEA. The Doctor and Ms. Benedict will both likely face federal charges.
