LEESBURG, GA (WALB) - The murder trial for a man charged in the death of an 82-year-old man began Wednesday.
Timothy French, 44, is charged with felony murder and the armed robbery of AJ Mosley of Smithville.
Investigators said Mosley was stabbed to death during the robbery attempt at his Pettis Road home on January 15, 2008.
A former Smithville Police Chief was one of the first witnesses to take the stand Wednesday inside the Lee County Courthouse.
Investigators reached out for weeks to the community in an effort to get leads in the case, but they were unsuccessful.
Then, in January of 2014, a full six years after the death investigation began, French was arrested in Smithville.
Georgia Bureau of Investigation agents said he had long been a person of interest, but said they obtained physical evidence that indicated French was responsible for the crime.
According to the Georgia Department of Corrections, Timothy French has served four previous sentences in prison for non-violent crimes.
