THOMAS CO., GA (WALB) -  A man who stole someone's identity ran from Thomas county deputies during a routine stop, and it was all caught on camera.

They thought he was 30-year-old Bobby Grant. But Captain Steve Jones with Thomas county Sheriff's Office says the man shown on the body camera video running from deputies is not named Bobby Grant.

The real Bobby Grant showed up at the Thomas County Sheriff's office and said this man stole his license and identity. Further investigation confirmed that the man in the video is, in fact, not Bobby Grant. Investigators are hoping someone will be able to correctly identify the man in the video.

Body camera video showed deputies approaching a red Chevrolet checked going 16 miles over the speed limit, but the traffic stop quickly turned into something more serious.

Captain Jones said, “He knew he was caught.  He involved the passenger, he involved the vehicle owner, and it just snowballed.”

Deputies said the man posing as Grant was driving this car, registered under his girlfriend's name, Friday afternoon on Highway 319.

“He appeared real nervous and was evasive in answering any questions.  But he did give him his driver's license,” said Captain Jones.

One deputy returned to his patrol car to check Grant's license while another deputy spoke with 28-year-old Eric Terry, who was sitting in the passenger's seat of the Chevrolet.

“But the man actually walked away from the deputy or ran away from the deputy and ran back to the vehicle,” said Captain Jones.

One of the deputies actually pulled out his firearm when Grant ran back to his car and looked like he was trying to reach for something from behind the driver's seat.

Deputies said Grant pulled out a clear plastic bag containing cocaine and marijuana.

He dropped the drugs while running across two lanes of traffic, but deputies were unable to catch him.

Captain Jones said, “He is wanted for possession of narcotics and other offenses involving the deputies.”

If you have any information on this man, call Thomas county Sheriff's office at 229-225-3300.
