Dancing to help find a cure for Alzheimer's Disease

TIFTON, GA (WALB) -

A Tifton woman is putting on her dancing shoes to help find a cure for Alzheimer's Disease.

Allison Gaskin's grandmother, who has Alzheimer's, is her inspiration. She's already raised thousands of dollars and hopes to make a difference in the community.

Allison Gaskins and her partner Angel Aguilar are practicing their “Bollywood" moves for a good cause.

"Alzheimer's affects everybody," said Allison Gaskins, Dancing Stars of South Georgia

Gaskins is one of 9 dancers who will compete alongside pros in the third annual Alzehimer's Association Dancing Stars of South Georgia competition.

She's been practicing for six weeks. Gaskins' inspiration is her 79-year-old Grandmother..Mamie Gray who has been battling the disease for three years.

" Her's has been very progressive and declined very fast," said Allison Gaskins.

Gray currently lives in an assisted living home and is able to recognize family, but Gaskins says her grandmother struggles with the concept of time.

“She may think I haven't been there in a week when I went the day before and that's hard because you can tell she just doesn't understand, "said Allison Gaskins.

Gaskins said people in the Tifton community have been willing to donate money in search for a cure. She's already surpassed her fundraising goal of 10 thousand dollars.

"The fundraising is a small part that I can do to help give back, help funnel money into the research so that hopefully they can find better treatments or possibly even a cure one day," said Allison Gaskins.

It's an accomplishment that Gaskins knows will make her grandmother proud.
