Fraternity makes sure homes have smoke alarms

ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

A Fraternity is making sure homes in Albany have smoke alarms.

The Grad Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha has been installing free smoke detectors in homes once a month since January.

Working with the Southwest Georgia Chapter of the American Red Cross, they've installed more than 80 smoke detectors so far.

“The number of lives that are lost because of a lack of smoke detectors in this area is sort of astonishing and the fact that you can get free smoke detectors from the Red Cross is a very important work and I think that it's a great service to the community and we're glad to do it,” said Benny Hand, President.

The fraternity will install smoke detectors every third Saturday in the month.
