ALBANY, GA (WALB) - Dougherty County School Police believe the "Creepy Crawler" is burglarizing an East Albany school. Victims gave him that nickname because surveillance video showed him crawling through multiple businesses.
After seeing our news stories, Dougherty County School police now believe the same crook broke into Jackson Heights Elementary School.
School Police Investigators recognized the Creepy Crawler, but it was their cameras got the best video of him so far.
On April 2nd a man breaks into the Jackson Heights Elementary School, breaking through a vent in their boiler room. Surveillance video links him to the Creepy Crawler that broke into several other businesses in recent weeks.
Dougherty Co. School Police Chief Investigator J. C. Phillips said "You see him crawling around on the floor."
Investigators could not show us the burglar crawling, but they got this shot of him in the light. Like previous surveillance he is carrying a hammer and a bag of tools. And like the other break-ins, he tried to tear out the burglar alarm wiring.
Phillips said "I suppose it was his intent to disable the alarm system. He disabled the fire alarm system, but not the alarm system. "
But he did thousands of dollars of damage. The alarm still went off, and a School Police Officer came to check, sending the burglar running.
Phillips said "He didn't get a chance to actually steal anything before our on call officer goes into the building to check the alarm. He was able to escape from him."
When school police saw our story on repeated burglaries at businesses like Shaw Stainless, they put the crimes together.
Phillips said "Based on what we have seen on the video you showed before, and based on what we see, yes. We're pretty certain it's going to be the same guy."
Now Dougherty County School Police are working together with Albany Police in their hunt for the Creepy Crawler, hoping someone will recognize him from the video.
