American flags planted in honor of flag day

VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) -

Valdosta's mayor was trying Thursday to show citizens that the city respects the American flag.

Mayor John Gayle declared Thursday flag day in the city. City employees decorated Saunders Park with American flags during the city's annual employee luncheon at the park Thursday afternoon.

Mayor Gayle said with all of the unrest in the city since a group of student protestors walked on an American flag at VSU on April 17th, he felt it was important to let citizens know where the city stands.

"I just wanted people to recognize Valdosta as a community that was patriotic, that honors our flag," Mayor Gayle emphasized.

As of Thursday afternoon, thousands of people were expected to descend on Valdosta and march around VSU from 1:30 p.m.-3 p.m. Friday to show their support and respect for the flag.
