THOMASVILLE, GA (WALB) -  A large donation of fruit to Second Harvest of South Georgia will help feed folks in need.

Harveys Supermarket donated close to 10,000 pounds of apples, Wednesday.

The donation is part of the "Take a Bite out of Hunger" campaign to bring attention to the problem of food insecurity in the United States and Canada.

Chief Marketing Officer of Second Harvest Eliza McCall said, “South Georgia ranks third in the nation for areas where children may go to bed hungry tonight.  This donation is great because it enables us to provide them with fresh nutritious fruit that they wouldn't otherwise have access to.”

FirstFruits Marketing of Washington sponsors the campaign and has donated close to one million pounds of fresh apples in the past five years.
