KJ's sister shot in the back

Brian Childress Brian Childress
VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) -

A sister of Kendrick Johnson was recovering Monday evening after being shot in the back early Monday morning.

Valdosta Police said 22 year old Kenyetta Johnson was shot while she was in a car with three other people around 2:30 a.m. at the Citgo station 600 E. Hill Ave.

Valdosta Police Chief Brian Childress wouldn't be very specific Monday afternoon about exactly what happened, only saying that the gun was accidentally discharged and that he believed this could've been prevented.

"This should not have happened. This was an instance that was avoidable. The person responsible was reckless in what they did," Chief Childress emphasized.

The car was found abandoned on Ponderosa Dr. a short time after the shooting. Childress said officers did speak to some of the people who were in the car at the time of the shooting as well as some people who were not. He said the people who were in the car were not initially cooperative with officers, but eventually told officers what happened.

Police did believe they knew who the shooter was as of Monday afternoon, but as of 5:30 p.m. Monday warrants had not been taken out against the individual.
