Westwood names Derrick Harris head varsity basketball coach

CAMILLA, GA (WALB) - On Monday afternoon, Westwood Schools' Headmaster Ross Worsham confirmed that the Wildcats have hired Derrick Harris as their new varsity boys head coach.

Harris was offered the job last week and accepted on Thursday.

Last season, Harris was the Wildcats head junior varsity coach.

"I'm very excited, " said Harris. "I have high expectations for the guys. Me and the kids are going to have lots of fun."

Harris has been an assistant coach for girls and boys basketball teams, but this will be his first varsity head coaching job.

"I'm not nervous," said Harris. "We're just going to work hard, learn the game of basketball and keep getting better."

Harris graduated from Mitchell-Baker High School in 1997 as a basketball standout. He said it is a special feeling to get to coach in his home town.

"An opportunity to step up to the next level here is exciting," said Harris. "To coach here at home, what better can you ask for?"
