Veteran stops protesters from walking on flag, gets put in handcuffs

VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) - A video of a Air Force veteran stopping protesters from walking on an American flag has gone viral.

Michelle Manhart says she heard about the protests at Valdosta State University, and complained, but the protests didn't stop.

She went up to college and took the flag, which she says was torn and damaged, so she could properly dispose of it, but ended up in hand cuffs.

Manhart says police released her later on, but she's banned from the university and all of its activities.

Dr. William J. McKinney, President of Valdosta State University, released this statement:

"The American flag represents everything that is best about our country. As the Supreme Court has held, one of those things is the right to free speech, which includes the right to disrespect even the symbol of our country. While I firmly disagree with the actions of the protesters, I understand their right to protest." — Dr. William J. McKinney, president of Valdosta State University.

The video has received nearly 2 million views.
