Train loaded with students smashes truck in Sumter Co.

DESOTO, GA (WALB) - Over 100 students from Westside Christian Academy in Warner Robbins were riding the SAM Shortline train on a field trip from Cordele to Plains, when the train smashed a pickup truck in Desoto, just before 10:30.

Sumter County Sheriff Pete Smith tells WALB that 64 year old Charlie Ford was driving his 2003 GMC Sierra on Main Street in Desoto, and failed to stop for the train.

The train hit his truck in the front end, but neither Ford nor the people aboard the train were injured.

"That's a big heavy train and like I say, it could push a pickup. Luckily he didn't hit it straight on, head on, T-bone or anything..kind of hit on the front end and spun it around," said railroad spokesman Terry Miller.

The train was operated by Justin Thomas of Leesburg.

The train suffered very little damage, and continued on to Plains where the students are visiting the Jimmy Carter Center.
