Red cross expanding campaign to prevent fatal fires

TIFT CO., GA (WALB) - The Red Cross is expanding its campaign to prevent fatal house fires in Tifton.

They'll install free smoke detectors in an area where many people don't have them.

“Just be vigilant a lot of the fire that we do reach out to a lot of them are cooking fires, people falling asleep while they have grease on the stove people having their stove up way too high,” Disaster Program Manager says Cheryl Edwards.

"People are at the lowest point of their lives at that time they don't know where to go and that's where we step in,” says volunteer Steve Brown.

She says about half smoke detectors in homes don't work properly.

She advises you to check them often.
