Black tie event raises money for scholarship initiative

ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

A black tie event Friday raised money for college scholarships for dozens of young men.

Albany State University's Center for the African American Male hosted this Scholarship Banquet.

Organizer Antonio Leroy says they hope to raise enough money to pay for 40 young men to attend college in 2017.

Right now, they have mentors working with high school kids to lead them down the right path.

“We know that a lot of kids especially African American males in our community have a lot of missing pieces, we feel that by putting positive role models, real role models in front of these men, we can in still in them to make better decisions and pull of their britches and move forward,” says organizer Antonio Leroy.

He says Alumni, businesses, and friends of Albany State are helping sponsor this scholarship initiative.
