Editorial: Baseball Safety

Since the death of Valdosta High baseball player Colton Shaw, several area high schools including Valdosta High have built fences to protect players and coaches in the dugouts at their fields.

We believe it is time for all state high school athletic associations to require their members to install protective barriers for their baseball and softball dugouts.

With baseballs and softballs leaving the field of play, no one is ever completely safe at a baseball or softball game.

However we believe dugout fences will give players, coaches and parents peace of mind and will make sure the tragic loss of Colton Shaw will help protect others who occupy high school dugouts.
