THOMAS CO., GA (WALB) - An entire neighborhood in Thomas county was devastated after learning a man was shot and killed in their mobile home community.
One suspect is now in custody.
Crime scene tape outlined the scene where investigators found the body of 31-year-old James Eric Poppell inside a home at the Azalea Mobile Home community Tuesday morning.
Captain Steve Jones with the Thomas County Sheriff's Office said, “The Sheriff's Office received a call around 11:30 of possible shots fired here at this Mobile Home community on North Pinetree Boulevard.”
That call came from Sandra Mainero, who said she was visiting with her aunt on their front porch when they heard gun shots.
Mainero said, “We saw the truck pull in, then we heard him jump out. We heard a little bit of fussing, and then we heard a gunshot.”
Mainero said she quickly gathered up the children and her aunt and ran inside.
“I got everybody inside. As soon as I hit the door, I called 9-1-1,” she said.
A Thomas County drug agent was close by and arrived on scene a couple minutes later.
“When he arrived, he found one man shot. Another male inside the house was taken into custody and is being questioned,” said Jones.
Mainero said she's thankful the suspect is in custody and prays neighbors won't have to experience this again.
“Nothing like that has ever happened out here. And they all have small kids. It's just devastating,” she said.
Investigators are not yet releasing the name of the suspect.
He's in custody at the Justice Center.
The Thomas County Sheriff's Office and the GBI are investigating.
