COFFEE CO., GA (WALB) - Investigators say they have found a body in a pond in Coffee County.
The body was found submerged in the water by officials near Mahogany Road Monday morning.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation was also called to the scene.
They said they found it near the same area that search and rescue teams had been leading an expanded effort to find Jose Mendez Diaz, who has been missing for more than two weeks.
"The little pond is really just a water hole, about 6 feet deep. It has algae all on top of it so you can't see in it; you can't see very well in it. But yeah, the search site was very close to this site," said Sheriff Doyle Wooten.
Officials said they believe the body is likely Diaz.
Coffee County Sheriff Wooten said the body would be sent to the GBI crime lab for further analysis. He also said no foul play was immediately suspected.
Searchers on horseback and in the air had been scouring the area. Since then crews were working hard on the ground, but turned up nothing until Monday.
Friends of Diaz told investigators that he may have been intoxicated and was known to get disoriented while walking.
Investigators also said Diaz had blacked out at work a few times in the days before he went missing.
Anyone with information is urged to call the Coffee County Sheriff's Office.
