A recent surge in gang activity is prompting police to get the community more involved and informed on area gangs.
Friday night Albany police were on high alert hoping to head off any retaliation for the deadly overnight of admitted gang member 19-year-old Prentice Davis, Junior who was shot in the buttocks while riding a bicycle in the 700 block of West Society Avenue. Police say gangs can have a powerful influence on young people.
"It's a big influence, its more powerful than the church at times, its way more powerful than the school systems. And what social media has put out, the entertainment industry has put out, its one of the biggest things going today drawing our youth to it," Captain Michael Presley said.
Today officers met with folks downtown to talk about the history of gangs and ways to combat the growing issue of criminal activity across the nation. City leaders including Mayor Dorothy Hubbard and commissioner Jon Howard attended the event as well.
