James Dixon of Douglas, a four-year veteran of the Coffee County jail, was arrested for having sex with an inmate at the jail.
Coffee County Sheriff Doyle Wooten said he learned about the incident on Tuesday, and that video surveillance verified the charge.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation was immediately called in to investigate.
Dixon was fired from his post, arrested, and charged with one count of violating his Oath of Office, and three counts Sexual Assault by Persons with Supervisory or Disciplinary Authority.
Dixon, 53, posted a $40,000 bond for all four charges and was released the same day.
Sheriff Wooten said it was part of his election platform to hold each and every employee of the Coffee County Sheriff's Office 100% accountable for their actions.
"I find Mr. Dixon's actions deplorable," Sheriff Wooten said. "Having the authority and legal ability to enforce laws in the state of Georgia comes with higher accountability and standard of conduct. I have not and shall never tolerate any such behavior from any member of this Office."
