Victim named in deadly in Lee Co. scooter crash

LEE CO., GA (WALB) - Officials say one person is dead after a crash between a scooter and a truck.

It happened Wednesday around 4 p.m. on Chokee Road near Hwy. 195.

According to Georgia State Patrol, 76-year-old James Moody was driving a scooter when he was hit by a truck driven by 25-year-old John Harrell.

Moody was killed instantly in the crash.

A GSP Specialized Reconstruction team is investigating.

Officials said distracted driving may have been a factor in the crash.

"We're finding the number one distracted driving has been one of the leading causes to traffic fatalities," said Trooper David Fretwell. It's become a big problem."

Harrell has since reached out to the Moody family, apologizing on Facebook and asking for prayers.

April has been designated as Distracted Driving Awareness Month.

Charges are pending in the crash.
