THOMASVILLE, GA (WALB) -  Thomasville firefighters are partnering with the Red Cross to install smoke detectors in homes around town.

In the past two weeks, the fire department has received more than $6,400 from local businesses and residents to purchase new smoke detectors.

They've installed almost 30 detectors, so far.

They plan to go door to door this weekend.

Thomasville Fire Marshal Tim Connell said, “Almost every day we receive calls from residents saying, 'Will you please come out and check my house and check my smoke detectors?' And, 'Please put a smoke detector up for us.'”

If your home needs a smoke detector, contact the Thomasville Fire Department at 229-227-7015.

If you'd like to volunteer Saturday, call Terri Jenkins at the American Red Cross at 229-242-7404 or email Terri.Jenkins@redcross.org

Volunteers should arrive at Fire Station 1 on Crawford Street at 8:30 a.m.
