ALBANY, GA (WALB) - An Albany man is in a burn center in Augusta after his clothing caught fire on Saturday, and the Albany Fire Department is investigating.
Michael Chapman, also known as 'Dancin Man' was standing by a stove in the house he shares with Betty Williams at 2111 Dervan Street, when something happened that caused his clothes to ignite.
"My smoke alarm went off. And when I went in the kitchen my back door was wide open, and Mike was on fire. Totally on fire. He didn't have nothing on but a collar around his neck. And I took the collar from around his neck," said Betty Williams
Firefighters did not investigate until today because they were not initially called about the accident.
Williams told officials that she heard the smoke alarm go off, went to investigate, and found Chapman outside, with his clothing ablaze.
She said she got the flames out, and called for an ambulance. Chapman was taken to Phoebe Putney, and then to Augusta.
Friends tell us that Chapman is in critical condition in the burn center.
AFD investigators say they learned of the incident today.
