Investigators hope someone can help them identify a thief who was caught on camera smashing into a gas station and taking cigarettes.

It happened late Sunday night.

A burglar in a white hooded jacket used a brick to bust through the glass door at a Citgo gas station on Highway 82 in Lee County.

"The burglar went inside with a big old trash can that he acquired from outside after dumping the trash out, and went in and started loading it up with cigarettes," said Lee County Sheriff Reggie Rachals.

Surveillance video showed him walking around the counter, then leaving. He did it all in less than a minute.

"The only thing I can figure is that he's selling them on the street or he's trading them for drugs, Sheriff Rachals said. "And that's the only reason I could think he would want to steal the cigarettes for. He can make free money off it and then he can buy his dope."

Store employees are taking inventory to find out exactly how many packs of cigarettes were taken, and how much it will cost them.

Before he made his move, the burglar paced back and forth around 11:15 Sunday night, a little more than an hour after the store closed.

"It took him about 5 or 6 minutes for him to finally decide to go in the door after he made sure everybody was gone and nobody was riding by," said Rachals.

Authorities hope someone saw something during that time and can help them catch this crook.

Anyone with information or recognizes the person on surveillance is urged to call the Lee County Sheriff's Office or CrimeSTOPPERS at 436-TIPS.
