Swearing in ceremony for federal judge

Federal Judge Leslie Abrams is now officially the District Judge for the Middle District of Georgia based here in Albany.

Judge Abrams was sworn in Friday afternoon, filling the seat held for the last 20 years by Judge Louis Sands.

Senior Judge Marvin J. Garbis administered the oath and Judge Abrams' sister, Georgia House Minority Leader Stacey Abrams, also spoke.

"A good judge is just not someone who can dispense justice. It is someone who can see into the darkest heart and find light. There is no one truer. No one better. No one that I trust more to hold this position than my sister," said Judge Abrams.

Judge Abrams previously was an assistant U.S. Attorney in the Northern District of Georgia.

Judge Sands will now serve as senior judge.
