GRADY COUNTY, GA (WALB) - Construction is now underway at Barber Park in Grady County.

The county will replace 30-year-old wooden light standards with modern concrete-based, metal poles.

The county and recreation department partnered with the city of Cairo to fund the much needed improvements.

The state awarded Grady county with a $100,000 grant and citizens donated close to $19,000.

Becky Bracewell with the Grady County Recreation Department said, “Cosmetically, it's going to be better, and of course for the kids and the safety of the children. As well as other programs that we have there.  It's going to be a great plus for the county.”

Barber Park's hosted an opening ceremony Thursday night to kick off the baseball season and to showcase the progress of this project.
