ALBANY, GA (WALB) - A former employee of the Albany Herald was arrested Tuesday for stealing the newspaper's payroll checks and for forgery.
The police report from last week's investigation indicates that William "Billy" Lemon was supposed to distribute the checks, but that employees did not receive them.
They first noticed something wrong late last year. Some 19 checks in the investigation ranged in amounts from $300 to $1,500.
Management called Lemon in to explain what happened to the checks, but instead, he cleaned out his desk and departed from the business.
Officials suspect that Lemon was keeping checks and having people forge signatures on them.
